Phoolan Devi, 1963-2001, became famous as a bandit, responsible for the murder of a number of people in Uttar Pradesh. She negotiated a surrender for herself, spent some years in prison, and and after her release she became a MP. She was shot dead in 2001, probably by relatives of some of those she was alleged to have killed.
